As a member of our Operations team, you will be required to work 8 hour to 12 hour shifts and participate in a rotating on-call and after hours stand-by duty schedule.
Position Summary
The Lead Facility Operator is responsible for the day-to-day safe and customer-oriented operations of the bio-gas plant and waste treatment. This position will conduct operations while following all standard operating procedures, safety programs, and environment protection. The Lead Facility Operator will be the main contact for the plant and demonstrate excellent communications and customer service to all stakeholders.
RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
- Operate and service bio-gas plant & building facility (e.g., boilers, automation systems, pasteurization systems, surveillance monitoring, emergency power) within code requirements.
- Plans, directs, schedules, and completes work activities for safe and efficient plant operations.
- Manage the bio-gas & power generation process utilizing equipment and systems.
- Responsible for receiving, disposing, and managing waste products deliveries.
- Maintain a daily log of operations, maintenance, and safety activities, and contributes to plant operations reports.
- Perform daily chemical sample and tests, and makes necessary adjustments.
- Maintain and repair process equipment (e.g., shut-down, boiler inspection, part replacement).
- Maintain accurate records of equipment, material use, and labour for regular work and trouble calls
- Maintain and service hot water systems (e.g., pumps, converters, heat reclamation system, piping).
- Monitor and respond to plant alarms and emergencies to provide maintenance services.
- Perform preventative maintenance tasks on all plant/energy center equipment, ventilation units, and systems.
- Disassemble/reassemble, clean, and lubricate machinery, components and process equipment.
- Establish, implement, and adhere to standard equipment operating procedures.
- Implements work processes and safe operating procedures for the job site in accordance with company policy, safe operating guides, and the Occupational Health & Safety Act.
- Perform corrective action or minor repairs, as required.
- Participate in renovation, upgrades and expansion projects.
- Apply theoretical and practical knowledge to continuously improve overall efficiency and process operations for the site.
- Liaise with outside contractors.
- Provide occasional training & guidance to others on the job site.
- Safely perform work in confined spaces and varying weather/temperature conditions (indoors and outdoors.
- Complete general maintenance and other waste management activities, as required to ensure a clean & safe work site.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Waste Water Technician, 4th class Operating Engineer, or related certification in the province of Ontario. Please note that we are not able to offer qualifying steam time based on the operating requirements of the bio-gas plant.
- Demonstrated experience in waste processing, plant operations, mechanical systems, and/or thermal energy.
- Knowledge of the bio-gas process, power generation system, and the auxiliary equipment required in the process.
- Proven ability to apply knowledge and skills to identify and implement continuous process improvements for plant efficiency, safety, and optimization.
- Strong aptitude for decision making, problem solving, and troubleshooting issues in a timely manner.
- Ability to work in varying weather/temperature conditions and perform physically demanding work as required.
- Able to read P&ID and coordinate project upgrade and renewal projects.
- Self-starter; ability to multi-task, work under pressure, and succeed with minimum supervision.
- Experience establishing standard operating procedures for equipment and implementing safe work procedures.
- Must be able to document their work and perform and manage communication with multiple site stakeholders.

- Excellent customer service skills and commitment to safe work procedures is essential.
- Able to read P&ID and coordinate project upgrade and renewal projects.
- Must be available to perform regular stand-by and emergency call-outs and have the ability to reach the Company’s premises within twenty minutes.
- Ability to operate a skid steer will be an asset.
- Confined Space Entry training considered an asset.
- Comprehensive technical knowledge and experience directly related to district energy, power generation systems including mechanical, electrical, civil, structural and industrial technical disciplines, as well as SCADA and BAS related to plant operation.
- Ontario Trade Certificate as an industrial electrician and millwright will be an asset
- Must have valid ‘G’ driving license in the province of Ontario and be able to travel to various job sites across the GTA on a daily basis
