Green Button is a way to download or connect utility-usage data (electricity, gas, water) to gain better insight into waste and inefficiencies, this allows customers to make adjustments to reduce their usage and save money.
On November 1st, 2021, Todd Smith, Ontario’s Minister of Energy, announced that regulated electricity and natural gas utilities in Ontario are mandated to provide Green Button to their customers within twenty-four months.

Green Button is the industry standard for securely accessing and sharing energy, natural gas and water usage data. Green Button enables customers to securely transfer their data to third-party solution providers, who can further assist them in monitoring and managing energy, natural gas or water usage. With convenient access to your data in an easy to understand format, you can leverage your new-found knowledge and better control and track your utility expenses.

The Green Button Download My Data (DMD) standard enables homeowners and property managers to download their electricity usage data from an energy service provider’s website in an industry-standard XML data format. Energy customers can utilize these data to view their historical and present energy usage, analyze trends, and make informed energy-management choices.
Extending upon the Green Button Download My Data (DMD) standard, the Green Button Connect My Data (CMD) standard allows customers to authorize direct, secure transfer of their energy usage data to third parties that can assist them with easily managing and conserving energy. In addition, due to the use of common, standardized Green Button formats, third-party developers can rapidly create and offer these products, services, and applications.
In 2015, the Green Button Alliance (“GBA”) was formed in North Carolina as a non-profit organization. The primary goals of the GBA is to further the development, compliance and participation in the global Green Button electricity-, natural gas- and water-data standard known as the ‘NAESB ESPI’ (North American Energy Services Board Energy Service Provider Interface) for electricity and natural gas. GBA helps to advance and promote the Green Button standard through the Green Button My Data Initiative which originated via the efforts of the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology, and the U.S. White House in collaboration with smart-grid efforts that affect utilities, solution providers and regional North American governments.

On September 2nd, 2021, the Ontario Government published a new regulation stating that an energy provider must implement the NAESB ESPI standard as well as (in accordance with the NAESB ESPI standard) make an account holder’s energy data available to both the account holder and anyone who has been authorized to receive this information. The regulation also stipulates that energy providers must provide access to the last 24-months of energy data, or however long the account has been active within the last 24 months. Energy usage information for interval periods of one hour or less – given that the energy provider’s meter allows – is also required to be shared with the account holder and whomever has been given access to the account. This regulation and updated requirements must be met on or before November 1, 2023 Every energy provider shall ensure that its implementation of the NAESB ESPI is certified by the Green Button Alliance to its “Connect My Data” and “Download My Data” standards. Green Button Connect My Data (CMD) is an open-data standard designed to unlock access to utility interval usage and billing data–providing easy, seamless access for software applications. Green Button CMD enables utility customers to authorize third-party solutions to quickly and securely obtain interval meter data and enables an accurate and detailed level of analysis to inform energy and water management decision-making–while ensuring customer data is protected and their privacy is maintained. Using the Green Button Connect My Data feature ensures that “The customer is always in charge and in control of their own data!”. Yes, that means you, the customer – can decide when and with whom you share your information and for how long. You have the ability to revoke access to your information at any point in time. Removing or stopping the connection between your data and any of your authorized third-party applications with the click of a mouse or tap of the finger. You can also choose to limit their access to only one meter even if you previously had multiple meters under your account.
Green Button Download My Data allows you to download your energy data securely in a machine readable format (XML). Your information may be securely downloaded within the ‘Download My Data’ section when you are logged into your Green Button account.
Green Button Connect My Data allows you to utilize 3rd party apps and solutions to better understand, manage and ultimately conserve your electricity. By using these innovative and interactive solutions, you will be able, for example, to see your energy consumption on a more regular basis, compare yourself to benchmarks, set your own conservation goals or even enter electricity conservation contests.
